Geografía

La República de Sudáfrica esta ubicada en el extremo sur del continente africano. Limita al este con el Océano Indico y con el Océano Atlántico al oeste. Por el norte tiene fronteras con Namibia, Botsuana, Zimbabue, Mozambique y Suazilandia. El estado de Lesoto es un pequeño país completamente rodeado por el territorio surafricano. Sudáfrica tiene tres regiones geográficas principales: el altiplano, las montañas y el litoral costero. A pesar de contar con dos sistemas fluviales importantes: el Limpopo y el Orange, la mayor parte de la meseta surafricana carece de ríos o lagos en la superficie. A lo largo del litoral hay playas y calas rocosas con una vegetación de arbustos. Las regiones montañosas que corren a lo largo de la costa, desde el Cabo de Buena Esperanza hasta el Valle de Limpopo, en el noreste del país, se dividen en las cordilleras de Drakensberg, Nuweveldberg y Stormberg.
Tras las elecciones de 1994, Sudáfrica se dividió en nueve provincias político-administrativas que son : The Western Cape (capital provincial y nacional Ciudad del Cabo); The Eastern Cape (capital Bisho); The Nothern Cape (capital Kimberley); KwaZulu-Natal (capital Pietermaritzburg); The Free State (capital Bloemfontein); The North West Province (capital Mmabatho); The Nothern Province (capital Pietersburg); Mpumalanga (capital Nelspruit) y por último Gauteng, (capital Johanesburgo).

Sistema Político

República. Obtuvo la independencia del Reino Unido en 1910. Jefe de Estado y de Gobierno: Presidente Thabo Mvuyelwa Mbeki (desde 1999). Historia reciente: Bajos las condiciones de la nueva Constitución, aprobada el 8 de mayo de 1996 y en vigencia desde el 4 de febrero de 1997, el poder legislativo reside un Parlamento bicameral, compuesta de la Asamblea Nacional y el Consejo Nacional de Provincias (antiguamente el Senado). La Asamblea Nacional es elegida por sufragio universal bajo un sistema de representación proporcional y tiene entre 350 y 400 miembros. El Consejo Nacional de Provincias tiene 90 miembros y seis delegados y cuatro delegados especiales de cada una de las legislaturas provinciales. El Presidente, elegido de los miembros de la Asamblea Nacional, ejerce el poder ejecutivo con el apoyo del gabinete.
Desde febrero de 1994 se han celebrado tres elecciones nacionales, así como locales. Tbaho Mbeki salió elegido para un segundo mandato de cinco años en abril de 2004, tras la aplastante victoria de su partido, Congreso Nacional Africano (ANC). Mbeki sustituyó a Neloson Mandela, cuando este se retiró a mediados de 1999. Las dos principales cuestiones nacionales a las que se enfrenta el gobierno de Mbeki es la gran oleada de crímenes y delincuencia y la pandemia del VIH, que afecta a un 10% de la población adulta. El rechazo de Mbeki a admitir el auténtico alcance del virus ha levantado duras críticas en todo el globo y se sabe que este tema

Idioma

Los idiomas oficiales de Sudáfrica son afrikaans, inglés, isiNdebele,, isiXhosa, isiZulú, Sepedi, Sesotho, Setswana, Siswati, Tshivenda y Xitsonga.

Religión

La mayoría de los habitantes son cristianos y practican alguno de los cultos de la Iglesia Católica, Anglicana, Protestante, Calvinista Afrikáner o de las Iglesias Independientes Africanas. También hay importantes comunidades hindúes, musulmanas y judías. Las religiones autóctonas están muy arraigadas y a veces se practican de forma conjunta con el cristianismo.

Convenciones sociales

El apretón de manos es la forma habitual de saludo. Se deben guardar las cortesías habituales al visitar la casa de un sudafricano. Se puede vestir de forma deportiva, aunque hay que llevar traje y corbata o vestido largo en eventos sociales formales, aunque se suele especificar en la invitación. Se prohíbe fumar en edificios públicos y en transporte público.
